| Roy Lichtenstein, a well-known American pop artist, was born on October 27th, 1923 in New York. He came from an upper middle class background. His early education was at a public school. Later he was sent to Franklin School for boys and did his secondary education there. There was no art in this school so Roy Lichtenstein took up design and art as a hobby out of school. An ardent jazz buff, he would attend performances at Apollo Theatre. While attending the jazz concerts he would also make portraits of the musicians playing on their instruments.
At the academy, while he was doing his final year, he joined summer classes in art, under the instruction of Reginald Marsh. After graduating, Roy Lichtenstein joined Ohio State University where he was able to do his degree in fine arts. He had a small break from his studies when he had to do a stint with the army for three years. He returned and continued with his studies. During this period one of his instructors Hoyt L. Sherman was a strong influence on his work. Roy Lichtenstein became an art instructor for a period of almost ten years, but on and off. He had his first solo exhibition in 1951 at a art gallery in New York.
Leo Castelli started exhibiting Roy Lichtenstein’s paintings at his art gallery. He had a solo exhibition in 1962 and influential collectors bought the whole collection. As he had made sufficient money with his paintings so he left his teaching job. |
